MURAL TIP #5 | Don't Have a Wall? Try These 5 Options...

So you REALLY wanna paint a mural, but no one will give you a wall to paint on, gosh darnit! Not to fear, there are lots of options for you. And the best part - any of these ideas we discuss can totally be used in your portfolio to get clients!

Alternate Mural Wall #1: A Chalkboard Wall

This one is my fave and a tried-and-true method I used for a year! You can buy chalkboard paint at your local hardware store, paint a coat on a wall or door, and then use either chalk or chalk markers to draw on a fun design. Pro tip: Use a magic eraser to erase the chalk and residue!

Alternate Mural Wall #2: Large Canvas

This is an easy one you can start with by simply buying a large canvas online and getting it shipped to your house (or go to your local art store.) Or another option is to buy a bunch of smaller canvasses and hang them together to form one big mural.

Alternate Mural Wall #3: Large piece of wood or cardboard

Visit your local lumberyard for some wood they have setting around and might not need (I did this for my first art show). Or go to a local electronics store for some refrigerator cardboard if you need something to practice spray painting on. Cheap options are out there!

Alternate Mural Wall #4: Hanging Masonite

This method is a bit advanced because of the hanging process, but if you have a friend with some tools, it’s an awesome, long-lasting method! Masonite is super smooth and you can buy it at only 1/8” thickness so it hardly appears on your wall. Here’s an example - look hard to see the edge of the panel!

Alternate Mural Wall #5: Windows

Windows are an awesome alternative to painting on walls because we alllll have windows and it’s so easy to practice on! You can use either window paint or acrylic markers to try it out and perfect your skills! Bonus: reach out to some restaurants to pretty up their windows!

Alright! No excuses anymore! Get out there and get painting:)

If you’re ready to paint but want a bit more instruction on how to do it all, I’ve got you covered! My entire mural course is available for you to start today right HERE.
