MURAL TIP #20 | How to mix and blend colors like a pro

Color blending and mixing are important skills for any artist to master, even as a muralist. Here are some tips to help you blend and mix colors like the professional you are!

Study color theory

Even if you just have some favorite colors that you’d prefer to use, make sure to spend a bit of time understanding the basics of color theory, such as the color wheel and color harmony. Knowing the basics will help you make a lil better decisions when blending and mixing colors.

Experiment with color

I used to do a lot of black and white murals, which is a challenge in itself, but it’s always good to try out different color combinations and experiment with different techniques to see what works best for you and for the piece you are creating,

Use a palette or bowls

Using a palette to mix colors can help you achieve consistent and controlled results - it doesn’t have to be fancy, it can be as simple as a plastic or glass surface. As for mixing bowls, I love using simple paper cups if its a one-day mural, or plastic food containers with lids if it’s a multi-day mural.

Start with a limited palette

When starting out, try to limit the number of colors you use to make mixing and blending easier - things can become really murky or brown if you try to combine too many. Also, always allow the paint to dry in between layers (unless you’re going for a specific look.)

Use a color chart

It’s a nice idea to keep a color chart handy. It can help you achieve consistent results from your mixing and make it easier to replicate colors in future projects. I also like to label my containers with which colors I used to achieve a color, and when in doubt, make more of the color rather than ‘just enough.’

Practice

Let’s be honest, blending and mixing colors takes practice, so don't be bummed if your results aren't perfect at first. Keep practicing and experimenting to improve your skills, and remember to always start with small amounts of paint so you don’t waste a bunch at a time.

With these tips, you should be able to blend and mix colors effectively and create those vibrant and harmonious compositions you’re looking to achieve! It's important to remember that color blending and mixing is an ongoing process and that there is always room for improvement and new discoveries - don’t take it too seriously that it stops being fun!
