MURAL TIP #19 | How to find people and places to paint murals for

Getting your art recognized takes some time, but there are calculated approaches you can take in order to help the process along. Here are some ways that I like to find people or places to paint murals for:

  1. Network with other artists: Here in Jackson Hole, we have 3rd Thursday, which is a month art walk. Events like these are the perfect way to meet other artists or gallery owners. Besides something like that, look for gallery art show openings, join online communities, or just DM other mural artists to potentially find new opportunities.

  2. Reach out to local businesses: Being a local artist is a huge advantage in your own town, so contact local businesses and organizations, such as coffee shops, restaurants, schools, and community centers, to see if they are interested in commissioning a mural or want to work on a project together.

  3. Participate in public art initiatives: In my town, “Jackson Hole Public Art” runs lots of art calls looking for various artists, so stay on the lookout for public art initiatives, such as mural festivals or public art programs, and apply to participate - you never know if you’ll win if you don’t try!

  4. Offer your services on freelancing websites: If you have some extra time between projects, you can offer your services on sites such as Upwork, Fiverr, or Freelancer. I’ve hired some awesome people on Upwork and find it to be so easy to connect with people. These can be a great way to find potential clients for mural projects.

  5. Use social media: If you aren’t using social media right now, START! Social media is the biggest way that I get clients and, I mean, it’s free! Continuously share your portfolio and promote your work on social media platforms like Instagram and Tiktok to reach potential clients.

  6. Create a website: As an artist, you should ideally have an e-commerce site so people can buy your work. Make it easy for people to purchase! I have used WordPress, Shopify, and Squarespace throughout the years but currently use Squarespace. Make sure your website looks modern, showcases your portfolio, and includes information about your services and prices.

By using any of these methods, you can reach potential clients and find new opportunities to paint murals starting today. Continuously build your body of work so that people see what you are able to do, so they’ll know if you’re the perfect person for their job.
