Creating Awesome Digital Illustrations: The Basics

Digital Illustrations are a huge part of my business and I absolutely love creating them. Today, I wanted to share the basic tools you will need to create your own digital illustrations.

  1. Computer or tablet. You'll of course need a device that runs digital illustration software, and I would strongly recommend an iPad Pro.

  2. Digital illustration software. There are many digital illustration software programs available, but the most popular are Adobe products and Procreate. If I was just starting out, I would purchase Procreate ($10) and then purchase Adobe Fresco when vector drawings are needed.

  3. Stylus. A stylus is a pen-like tool that you use to draw on a tablet. I use an Apple Pencil and it has always worked perfectly.

  4. Reference materials: Having reference materials like images, photos, or sketches, can help you create more accurate and realistic illustrations if you are going for realism. But remember, do not simply copy.

  5. Backup and storage. Both programs allow you to backup your work (which I often forget to do) so don’t be like me…make sure to regularly backup your work and store it in a secure location.

By having these basic tools, you will be able to get started on creating digital illustrations. And then, as you continue to improve or get more projects, you may find that you want to expand your toolkit with additional software, hardware, or accessories. Follow digital artists online to find out what the latest and greatest tools are!
