MURAL TIP #16 | Debunking myths about Mural Painting

If you’ve ever thought that murals are only painted by graffiti artists in the middle of the night, think again. These days, murals are painted here, there, and everywhere by artists of every kind. So, if you’re unsure if painting murals is for you, here are some common myths about mural painting that are not necessarily true:

  1. Murals can only be painted outdoors. Nope, murals can be painted on both indoor and outdoor surfaces, such as walls, ceilings, and floors. Most of my projects are actually indoors, which is really nice because the temperature and climate are controlled.

  2. Murals are only for large public spaces. Actually, murals can be any size, from large public spaces to small private rooms. A lot of people love murals in their bathrooms, which can really enhance the space!

  3. Murals can only be painted by professional artists. Of course, professional artists are always a smart move when hiring someone to paint murals because of their experience, but anyone with a creative vision and a willingness to learn can create a mural. This is the main reason I created my online course “How to Paint Murals and Get Paid” for people like you who are ready to jump in and give painting murals a try - you can grab it today right HERE.

  4. Murals must be permanent. Surprisingly, murals can be painted on temporary surfaces, such as canvas, boards, or polytab, meaning they can be (somewhat) easily moved or stored. I wrote an entire blog about this as “MURAL TIP #7.”

  5. Murals are only for certain types of art. Incorrect. Murals can feature any type of art, from realistic depictions of nature to abstract designs and they all bring a super unique and interesting take to whatever wall they are on. I also often paint murals as marketing for companies, which can be quite a good money maker.

  6. Murals are expensive. True and false. The cost of a mural can vary widely depending on factors such as the size, location, and materials used, so, while some murals can be quite expensive, there are also budget-friendly options available. I like to give my clients 2 cost options so they can decide how complex they’d like the mural to end up and the cost they want to invest in it.

Now that you know there are things that you might have thought before that may not be true, you can better appreciate the versatility and potential of mural painting.
